Saxo Annalist's “Chronicle” is one of the largest in Medieval Europe, both in volume and in the period it covers, and is considered one of the most authoritative sources on the history of the Middle Ages. Nothing is known about its author (except that he is a Saxon), but, according to researchers, when compiling his work, he used more than 100 independent chronicles from different authors, and the anonymous person himself received the respectful nickname Annalista. According to citations, “Chronicle” of Saxo Annalista has no equal, and for a number of events is the main source. Translations of fragments of Annalist's "Chronicle" wander from one anthology on the history of the Middle Ages to another, but this "Chronicle" is published entirely in Russian for the first time.
