Is it possible to understand in advance what kind of blood and sacrifices the policy of the next statesman will end in? The example of Hitler shows: few people have the gift of foresight, but the cost of a mistake can be excessively high. The author studied dozens of memoirs of people who lived in Germany or visited the country in the thirties of the last century: diplomats, military men, journalists, writers, artists, athletes, businessmen, tourists. They saw the violence of the “party in power” over political opponents; repression of minorities, homosexuals, social democrats and anyone who did not keep pace with the totalitarian state that was pouring with the juice of hatred. Some of these outside observers did not think about the horrors of war and the Holocaust that the populism of the Nazis might end with. Others deliberately turned a blind eye to the “excesses” because they liked the new energetic and inspired Germany. But even those who were critical of Hitler were able to realize the true scale of the disaster when it was too late to change anything.
