George Acropolis is one of the largest Byzantine historians of the 13th century. His main work, the History, serves as the main source on the history of the Nicaean Empire, which arose after the fall of Constantinople in 1204 as a result of the Fourth Crusade. Chronologically, it covers events from 1203 to 1261 with small excursions into the 12th century. and is, as it were, a continuation of the “History” of Nikita Choniates. Therefore, although the author's focus is on the history of the creation, expansion and power of the Nicene Empire itself, he covers in some detail events in other parts of the former Byzantine Empire: the Kingdom of Epirus, Bulgaria, Thessalonian and Latin empires. The reader is presented with vivid pictures of the acute and intense struggle for hegemony in this region between the Greek states, Bulgaria and the Latin Empire. Campaigns and battles, marriage alliances and treaties, the struggle with internal opposition, the daily life of the Nicaean emperors - everything is in the field of view of the historian, who personally took part in many events as a logothete - one of the highest civilians of the last empire of the Byzantine world.

Contents: Empire in exile. Instead of a preface. The personality and work of George Akropolitus. George Akropolitus. History (Translated from Greek). George Acropolis.
