The published book by A. Kazhdan is the second monographic study in scientific literature of the work of one of the most interesting and talented Byzantine historians, Nikita Choniates (late 12th - early 13th centuries). The first work, written by F.I. Uspensky, was published in St. Petersburg in 1874. The title of the book accurately determines its content. The first part of each of the three chapters presents an analysis of the main socio-economic and cultural processes in Byzantine society in the 11th–12th centuries; the second part is a study of how these processes were reflected in the work of Choniates. The appendix contains eleven articles by the author about Choniates, published in various publications in different years. Most of them are written on the basis of an extensive conceptual dictionary of the language of Choniates compiled by the author. The book can be useful both to professional historians and researchers of medieval literature, and to an educated reader interested in Byzantium and its literature.
