Brassai (1899–1984) was born in the city of Brasov in the Hungarian part of Romania. He came to France after the First World War. At first he was interested in painting and was closely acquainted with Henry Miller, Michaud, Reichel and many others. His first photographs of Paris at night brought him fame, after which Brassaï made his final choice in favor of a career as a photographer. His legacy includes, among other things, essays on Picasso, Miller and Marcel Proust.
