When Mary Morstan came to Holmes to ask for his help in the “Sign of Four” case, she reminded Holmes of how he had once helped Mrs. Cecil Forrester settle “one minor domestic problem.” Holmes did not immediately remember this case, but having remembered, he described it as “elementary.” The proposed story sets out the details of this “elementary” case about a suspected maid and Mr. Forrester.
