A man of the broadest erudition, Alexander Nikolaevich Veselovsky entered the history of culture as a scientist whose works to a certain extent anticipated the structural anthropology of the mid-20th century. He was one of the first to study mythological and folklore subjects, which would later be called archetypal. According to P. Struve, in Veselovsky we found the most educated philologist in the world of the 19th century. Surprisingly, now Veselovsky’s works have practically “fell out of use.” Without exaggeration, we can say that the remarkable scientist has become a “figure of silence”: he seems to be remembered, his works are referred to, but the works themselves cannot be found. And this publication is an attempt to “return” Veselovsky to the context of modern Russian culture. This publication is devoted to the study of the beliefs of the Slavs, reflected in myths, legends, rituals, and folk poetry.
