On November 17, 2019, Paul B. Preciado speaks in Paris to 3,500 psychoanalysts as part of the International Days of the Freudian School. Presenting himself to people whose profession diagnoses him with mental illness and gender dysphoria, Preciado's speech draws on Franz Kafka's Report to the Academy. In this work, a monkey, having learned human language, speaks to an academy of the highest scientific authorities. Far from emancipating, Kafka's talking monkey explains that learning human language was for her only a transition from one cage to another from iron bars to human subjectivity. Addressing psychoanalysts from his cage of a “transman”, “a body of a non-binary gender”, Preciado calls for the development of “ a new epistemology that can include the radical plurality of living beings, that does not limit the body to its heterosexual reproductive capacity and does not justify patriarchal and colonial violence, but also provides recognition of other forms of political subjectivity.
