For the first time in Russia, a book by Henry Parland, a Finnish writer and poet who wrote in Swedish, is being published. An unusually gifted young man, in just a few years of his creative life, Parland managed to publish a collection of poems, highly appreciated by his contemporaries, write dozens of short stories, publish articles and essays on literature, cinema, theater, ballet and, finally, write the novel “Shattered” that made him famous. The hero of the novel tries to revive in his memory the image of his deceased beloved, for which he turns to her photographs. The process of remembering is compared to developing photographs. Returning to the past, restoring in detail the girl’s appearance, details and signs of time, the hero tries to understand why their romance remained only mutual affection, based on the hero’s desire to subjugate his girlfriend to his will and her indifferent submission. The book also includes poems by Henry Parland, written by him in Russian.
