Wilfred Trotter (1872-1939) - a talented English surgeon and an outstanding sociologist. Developing the ideas of Gustave Le Bon, set out in his famous book “Psychology of Nations and Masses,” he made a real breakthrough in the study of human group behavior and methods of crowd control, which are now actively used by political strategists and marketers.

Wilfred’s book Trotter's work on the “herd instinct” was published almost immediately after the end of the First World War. Observing how warring governments resorted to various forms of propaganda and persuasion in an attempt to induce the "mass man" to support the war effort, Trotter theorized about the inherent herd instinct in humans, the pursuit of which often conflicts with the three basic instincts of survival, nutrition and procreation. Trotter became interested in the phenomenon and tried to understand the mechanisms of the psyche that force a person to obey the leader and the opinion of the majority, contrary to his own interests.
