In 1983, four self-described fistheads exploded onto the multi-style punk rock scene of Los Angeles with their own cosmic, dangerous hardcore funk. 20 years later, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have, against all odds, become one of the most successful bands in the world. Although the band has gone through many reincarnations, Anthony Kiedis, the lyricist and dynamic performer, has been with the band every step of the way. A Web of Scars is Anthony Kiedis' candid memoir of his fast-paced life. At the age of 11, raised in the Midwest, Anthony Kiedis moved to Los Angeles to live with his father, who was a supplier of pills, marijuana and cocaine to the Hollywood elite. Until the age of 13, he and his father shared drugs and girls during wild parties attended by such prominent Sunset Boulevard stars as Keith Moon, Jimmy Page and Alice Cooper. After briefly trying to play teenagers in films, Anthony dropped out of UCLA and plunged headlong into the darkness of Los Angeles' underground music scene. Homeless, he stole food, sneaked into concerts, and took cocaine and heroin. Every night, after spending hours in clubs, Kiedis desperately tried to find another place to have fun. Finally, he found a way to do it in music. Teaming up with his three high school buddies, for the first time in his life, he has a goal: to unleash his sexual energy and spread the energetic Chili Peppers parties in the band's original Uplift Mofo Party style. Traveling across the country, the Chili Peppers acted as musical pioneers who influenced an entire generation of musicians. But excess and success come at a price. In the book, Kiedis writes openly about the overdose of his close friend and bandmate Hillel Slovak, his own struggle with drug addiction, which left him a homeless multimillionaire taking the wheel with Mexican mafiosi under freeways in the Latino areas of Los Angeles. After hitting rock bottom, Anthony embarks on a spiritual journey that takes him to India, Borneo, Thailand and New Zealand to discover that the key to enlightenment lies in his own backyard. Whether it be through memories of the influence of a beautiful, strong woman who he admired; a return to his various travels, such as performing in front of half a million people at Woodstock, or meeting the humble Dalai Lama. The web of scars is irresistible to read. This is a story of loyalty and corruption, intrigue and honesty, recklessness and redemption. A story that could only happen in Hollywood...
