In the 16th century, a scandalous story that occurred in the noble Italian family of the Counts of Cenci shocked all of Europe. The old man Cenci placed his daughter Beatrice and his second wife, young Lucrezia, in his castle of Petrella in the Kingdom of Naples, where he committed the violent sin of incest with her. It is said that Beatrice sent a petition to the Pope in which she complained about these circumstances, but it did not achieve its goal. It is believed that it was after this that Beatrice conceived the crime. In 1598, she, along with her stepmother Lucrezia Petroni-Cenci and her brother Giacomo, conspired to kill her father, a “rude and depraved” old man. She was convicted of this crime and executed along with her accomplices by beheading. This story has served as the subject of numerous literary works.
