The Rurik dynasty is a dynasty of Russian princes and then tsars, which ruled for 736 years, from the end of the 9th to the 16th centuries. According to the chronicle legend, Rurik, the leader of the Varangian tribe “Ros” or “Rus”, was called by the Ilmen Slavs to reign in Novgorod. “Nestor writes that the Slavs of Novgorod - the Krivichi, all the Chud sent an embassy overseas, to the Varangians of Rus', to tell them: “Our land is great and abundant, but there is no order in it: come reign and rule over us.” This is the version of the historian N. Karamzin, set out in the “History of the Russian State”. The grandson of the legendary Gostomysl, Rurik, agreed “to accept power over people who, knowing how to fight for freedom, did not know how to use it.” The Rurik dynasty experienced periods of ups and downs and, finally, with the death of Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich in 1598, it disappeared from the historical scene. And the Russian state grew stronger in battles and trials, its power and authority grew. The people of Russia emerged victorious in the fight against the Horde yoke, the Time of Troubles and the invasion of foreigners. The country entered the century of the Romanovs.
