Sheikh Mansur (c. 1760–1794) was a Chechen folk hero who tried to defend the independence of the mountain people from the Russian Empire. Having led a popular uprising in the North Caucasus in 1785–1791, he won many victories over the tsarist troops. Inequality in forces and weapons, strife among Mansur's supporters took their toll - the sheikh was captured and ended his days in the Shlisselburg fortress. His activities left a deep imprint in the memory of the Chechens and other peoples of the Caucasus. Mansur became the forerunner of the great Imam Shamil, who considered himself his successor.
