The fiction writer A.P. Kamensky (1876–1941), who tragically died in a Stalinist concentration camp, gained great fame at the beginning of the 20th century as a preacher of complete freedom and naturalness of human and, in particular, sexual relationships. The collection includes his most famous best-selling novel “People” (1910), the heroes of which perform risky experiments on themselves, testing different guises of love, lust and passion in paradoxical situations. In the cycles of his stories, including the scandalous “Leda” and “The Four,” light humor and frivolity are combined with preaching the destruction of outdated “philistine” morality, glorifying free feelings and the beauty of the human body. Kamensky’s light, elegant prose does not seek answers to tragic “world questions”; for it, the greatest world value is love, which does not require any moral, social or other justification.
