The Austrian diplomat Sigismund Herberstein visited Moscow in 1517 and 1526. Herberstein was one of the first to tell the European reader about the life and customs of the peoples of Rus' - an Eastern European power, about the life of the grand duke's court, court etiquette, the organization of the army, money circulation and trade. He showed the difficult situation of peasants and serfs, described a Russian wedding, and folk entertainment. He managed to get acquainted with such monuments of ancient Russian writing that have not survived to this day and are known only in his translations. All this makes the book a most valuable historical source. SUMMARY: From the editor (5). From the translator (9). Sigismund Herberstein. Notes about Muscovy (19). Illustrations (705).
