Prince Lev Vladimirovich Shakhovskoy (1849–1897), from the beginning of hostilities against Turkey in 1877, was in the active army in the Balkans, marched with the advance detachment of the future Field Marshal I.V. Gurko as a war correspondent. “This just a series of impressions recorded by me during my stay in the troops of General Gurko,” this is how Shakhovskoy himself introduced his book to readers.
