The events of the novel take place in 1914–1918 in the Black Sea Fleet.  At the center of the novel is the fate of midshipman Alyabyev, his first love, on the path of which class differences stand as an insurmountable obstacle. Through his eyes, the reader will see caste hostility on ships, the tragic disunity of sailors and officers of the pre-revolutionary fleet on the eve of the first imperialist war.
