“Memorial of Saint Helena” is a cult book that shocked contemporaries in its time - a diary kept by the Count of Las Cases, who followed Napoleon into exile on the island of Saint Helena. Las Kaz, day after day, wrote down everything that the emperor did and said. Part of the diary was dictated by Napoleon himself. “Memorial” was first published after Napoleon’s death in 1822-1823 and immediately became a bestseller. Almost all historians, no matter how they evaluate Napoleon and his role in building European civilization, quote this book, which is truly invaluable for those who are interested in the French emperor and his time. The first edition of the Memorial was published in 1822-1823. In 1831, the last supplemented edition published during his lifetime was published; it is given with some abbreviations of the excessive details of the military battles, as well as the last 100 pages describing the life of Las Casas after his expulsion from St. Helena. The woodcuts reproduced in this book are from the first illustrated edition of 1842.
