The book presents the life and work of the Anglo-Saxon theologian, scientist and historian Bede the Venerable (672/3–735). The basis of the book is a study of Bede’s worldview based on an analysis of his writings - commentaries on the books of Holy Scripture, works on history, rhetoric, treatises that spoke about the structure of the world and the “nature of things.” Although Bede's works deal with diverse themes and are composed according to different rules, one can see in them a commonality in the ways in which cultural meanings are produced. What was the reason for such unity? What are the techniques for narrating such seemingly dissimilar things as biblical texts, chronology, geography and the past of peoples? How do Bede's texts reveal the principles of knowledge production characteristic of the Christian scientific tradition of the early Middle Ages? In order to answer these questions, the author examines Bede's system of ideas about faith, the universe, history, place and purpose of man in the context of the intellectual culture of Anglo-Saxon Britain. The book may be useful to historians, students, teachers, as well as a wide range of readers who are interested in the history and culture of the European Middle Ages.
