The end of the German submarine was terrible. Two searchlights kept the wheelhouse of the pursued submarine in the crosshairs. Obviously, at some point they blinded her commander - Lieutenant Commander Adolf Kellner made a mistake, and U-357 ended up directly in front of the stem of the destroyer Hespirus. Cut in half by the “hunter”, the submarine instantly sank, leaving a large oil slick on the surface of the sea and several people floundering in it... This is just one of the episodes of the greatest underwater battle in history, known as the Battle of the Atlantic, which lasted a total of more than five years and claimed the lives of tens of thousands of sailors. For the first time, submarines solved strategic problems, for the first time the fate of the war depended on their victory or defeat - Churchill later admitted that German submarines almost brought the British Empire to its knees. However, despite the unsurpassed combat skill, courage and ruthlessness of Rudeltaktik (wolf pack tactics), it was not the Kriegsmarine submariners, but the Allied anti-submarine forces that emerged victorious from this battle.
