"Born in Battle" is the first and so far the only multifaceted study in Russian on the history of medieval Scotland. The author, a senior researcher at the Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, gives an overview of the components of the Kingdom of Scots, tracing the development of a unified monarchy, feudal relations, the clan system, cities and the national church. Particular attention is paid to the early formation of the Scottish people and the first, decisive stage of the wars for independence from England, which culminated in the victory of the Scots led by William Wallace and King Robert the Bruce. The author sought to reflect as fully as possible the distinctive heritage of the Scottish Middle Ages, including through a rich selection of illustrations. It is significant that the second edition of the book is published on the eve of the historic referendum on Scottish independence from the United Kingdom and in the year of the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn.
