A poignant novel about the love of a white girl and an Innu Indian, about the life of a large family against the backdrop of historical changes. Like all children of Canadian settlers, Almanda was taught to hold on to her plot of land and work in the fields. But on the bank of the river she met an Indian who had come in a canoe, and the free nomad life beckoned her. Fifteen-year-old Almanda was not afraid of hunting, fishing, cooking over a fire and crossing wild rivers. She learned to read clouds, tan hides, and give birth to children. The family's life in the forest was incredibly happy, but the idyll did not last long: progress came to the lands of the Indians and began to take away everything that was dear to Almanda, one after another. Bitter, but at the same time filled with intimate intonations and the light of memory, a novel about those whom they preferred not to notice for a long time. The book is based on the life story of Kukum, the writer’s great-grandmother.
