On August 8, 1944, he conducted one of the most successful tank battles in history, shooting at a column of British Shermans from his Tiger No. 134 and knocking out 15 of them. In total, during the war years, Fey destroyed 80 enemy tanks, became one of the best tank aces of the Third Reich and became a holder of the Knight's Cross. His book, based on personal testimonies and unpublished memoirs of German tank crews, which Fey collected for many years, is considered one of the best studies of combat applications SS tank units during the Second World War.
