Hans Keilson (1909–2011) began writing The Death of My Enemy in 1941 after emigrating from Nazi Germany to the Netherlands. He actually buried the first pages of the manuscript in the garden, fearing deportation. Published in 1959, the novel became his magnum opus. In 1962, Time magazine included it among the ten most important books of the year, along with texts by Faulkner, Nabokov, Philip Roth and Borges. The author lived for more than a century, maintaining a sharp mind and sense of humor, and lived to achieve worldwide recognition. The novel is published in Russian for the first time.
