History teaches that great powers do not last forever - sooner or later, any of them, no matter how powerful, finds itself on the verge of collapse and gives up its place on the “world chessboard” to new ambitious players. This was the case with the first “Euro-Atlantic” empire - the Macedonian kingdom of Alexander the Great, and so it was with the Roman Empire, and with the British Empire, on which “the sun never set.” A similar fate, according to Charles Kaphen, professor at the School of International Affairs at Georgetown University and director of the European Department at the Council on Foreign Relations, awaits the current “world hegemon” - the United States of America.
