1709 France is still ruled by an aging Louis XIV. In Versailles, two French nobles, having quarreled over a card game, violate the existing ban on dueling and find themselves between prison and the executioner's block. By the mercy of the king, the execution was replaced by exile to Russia, which is waging war against Sweden. Both end up in opposing armies on the eve of the Battle of Poltava.
