The Prado is the largest museum in the world, which houses paintings by European artists from the 12th to the 19th centuries. The Prado is located in the capital of Spain, Madrid, and therefore has the largest collection of Spanish paintings in the world. The museum collection consists of three large parts: paintings that belonged to the Spanish kings; works created under the patronage of the church and later transferred to the state; works of art received as a gift or purchased by the museum.
