The work of the modern American political philosopher Robert Nozick is devoted to justifying the inevitability and fairness of the existence of a “minimal state”. As a starting point, the author considers the “natural state” of society, in which there is no state yet and basic ethical norms apply - the right of a person to dispose of himself, to appropriate material objects that do not belong to anyone and to voluntarily exchange his property with other people. Nozick proves that the state, i.e. an organization with a monopoly on violence can arise from a “state of nature” through the voluntary delegation of primary rights by people. This state will have as its sole function the protection of the lives and property of citizens from violent attacks. Any expansion of its functions (including the creation of institutions of a “welfare state”) will mean a violation of basic rights and lead to negative consequences for society. All necessary public functions, except protective ones, must be carried out on the basis of voluntary cooperation. Since its publication, Robert Nozick’s book has acquired the status of a classic and has become required reading for all who study political philosophy and related disciplines. It will be useful to specialists in the field of political philosophy, political science, economics, law, sociology, as well as students and teachers relevant specialties.
