A city in the steampunk world of America. Horse-drawn carriages coexist with trams, residents deify cats, and epidemics of cholera and chickenpox are raging in the slums. A revolution has just occurred, and now the country is torn apart by civil war. A girl named Dee asks to be appointed to the post of curator of the Society for Research into Connections with Other Realities in order to try to find her deceased older brother - if not among the living, then among the dead... or in other worlds. Meanwhile, in the nearby dilapidated museum, strange exhibits appear of their own accord: a mysterious black-bearded inhabitant of the former embassy tortures to death the people who were dedicated to him for torment by someone unknown, and the gloomy Mortuary Ship gathers a team of the dead at night...
