It is known that the victory won by Scipio the Elder over Hannibal marked the decline of Carthage and marked the beginning of Rome’s ascent to the pinnacle of power and might. Scipio the Elder as a commander is in no way inferior to Alexander the Great and Gaius Julius Caesar, and as a person, perhaps even higher than them. Having defeated Hannibal, he did not demand his head and did not destroy Carthage. He did not take revenge on the murderers of his father, and one of them, the Numidian king Masinissa, became his devoted friend. He had no prejudices. He loved the then already weak Greece and admired its culture, which was not befitting a Roman of his era. He could have gained unlimited power over Rome, but he did not want power.
