This work, like Breker’s other works (a series of essays on Shakespeare’s plays, dialogues, diaries, journalism), vividly conveys the era, starting with the life of Berlin during the time of Frederick II and the Seven Years’ War and ending with the events associated with the Great French Revolution. In his vivid, historically accurate paintings, Brecker reproduces in detail the social life and family life of the Swiss in the second half of the 18th century, the everyday life and holidays of the inhabitants of his homeland - the Tokkenburg Valley in the canton of St. Gallen, and the harsh and beautiful alpine landscapes. The book combines simplicity with irony and heartfelt lyricism. The work resembles either an adventure novel, or an idyll, or a diary, sincerely telling about the life of the soul.
