Dialogue with Orthodoxy We, East Slavic Protestants, live in countries where on Easter even non-believers congratulate each other with the words “Christ is risen!” and invariably answer “He is truly risen!” In Russian, the final day of the week is called “Sunday” in honor of the victory of Jesus Christ over death, and the word of thanks comes from the wish “God save (you)!” In western Ukraine, people are greeted with the words: “Glory to Jesus Christ!” - “Forever glory!” The surrounding culture is simply saturated with the influence of Christianity. And it is not surprising - after all, Orthodox Christianity has been the strongest shaping factor in our countries for more than 1000 years. In evangelism and ministry, we have no right to treat our people as a tabula rasa—a blank slate. And in general, if a Christian minister does not take into account the difference between the cultures of Ukraine and America, Peru and China, this is not only foolishness, but also disobedience to God’s word. The principle of the Apostle Paul “to the Jews I was like a Jew” should be an important slogan of any Christian who wants to be successful in missionary work, and in evangelism in general. Biblical commands and examples require that we consider and utilize the cultural background of those to whom we carry God's Word. Neither Christ nor the apostles proclaimed the good news in a stereotyped manner, but always adapted their preaching and ministry to a specific audience. Orthodoxy has played a major role in the formation of the culture, religious and philosophical mentality of the East Slavic peoples for a thousand years. Understanding Eastern Orthodox Christianity is one of the key conditions for successful evangelical ministry in Eurasia. This book should help Protestant readers deepen their understanding of Eastern Orthodoxy by comparing Western and Eastern views of the Christian faith, and help them contextualize and refine their theology and ministry. Perhaps our “Dialogue” will help some Orthodox Christians to better know Protestant Christianity and become established in the truths of God’s word.
