The Missionary Union “Light in the East” is 90 years old. Actually, nothing unusual. There are longer lasting and larger missionary societies. And yet, when reading this book by Waldemar Zorn, a long-time employee of our mission, describing the exciting events in the history of the Missionary Union, the reader will immediately notice that “Light in the East” is something special; namely, a missionary society created for the purpose of preaching the Gospel to Russian soldiers in German prisoner-of-war camps. And this was during the hungry years after the First World War, when the population of Germany suffered incredible hardships! The fact that people at that time, in addition to their worries and needs, in addition to the suffering of their own people, were able to see the plight of captured enemy and enemy soldiers is in itself quite amazing. But the fact that under such circumstances they asked their fellow citizens to sacrifice in support of Russia and the Russian people seems simply unthinkable to us today. This testifies to the great love God has placed in the hearts of these people - love for the peoples of Russia! Some of the mission workers in this book emerge from the darkness of history, like brushstrokes of color in a larger painting. These are extraordinary, impressive individuals. Among them are the founders of the mission, Walter Jacques and Jacob Kreker, prisoners of war, people forced into forced labor, preachers, missionaries, people smuggling spiritual literature, martyrs. These are men and women who have dedicated their lives to God and who have accompanied Light in the East for the past 90 years. And, remembering these people who shaped the path of the Missionary Union, we see that Jesus Christ was and is the Lord of history. He made this way possible, and He led the mission this way. I find great encouragement in the fact that through my service in the Light in the East mission I can participate in the work of God, which He has been doing for decades and is still doing today through the fathers and mothers of the faith. I hope this book will be an encouragement to you too.
