A messenger from his school friend Klaus Patera arrives in Munich to visit the narrator, a talented graphic artist. It turns out that during the time that the friends did not see each other, Patera became fabulously rich and built a “kingdom of dreams” in the Tien Shan mountains in strict isolation from the outside world. The narrator and his wife received an invitation to settle in Perla, the capital of this amazing country. But in reality, everything turned out to be not quite as wonderful as they expected. The sun over the city, built up with ancient houses brought from Europe, was always obscured by clouds, and the inhabitants were gathered according to the principle of deviation from the norm.
