XVII century. Franche-Comté, the main bone of contention between the European powers, went to the Spanish crown. Residents of the free county respected the Spanish king, who did not change their way of life, but they could not stand France, which, like an annoying fly, hovered around their borders all the time. Therefore, when Cardinal Richelieu declared war on Spain, the inhabitants of Franche-Comté declared their war on France. One of the most famous heroes of this war was Captain Lacuson. He was loved and known by everyone in the area, he became the embodiment of freedom and the personification of courage. The people of Franche-Comté are resilient and desperate people. To defend their right, they are ready to go to great lengths, even take Richelieu himself hostage. Xavier de Montepin, one of the most popular French writers of the late 19th century, using facts from Lacuson’s biography, talks about the dramatic events of the war, which historians conventionally call the Ten Years’ War (1635– 1644).
