Private detective Mariel Adams finds herself at a party hosted by the rich man Robert Crown, who bought and restored Fernie Castle. During the reception, one of the guests, billionaire and art collector Maurice Parr, suddenly dies. The main version of the investigation is suicide, since no one has any obvious reasons to want Parra dead. It is not clear why such an inappropriate place and time was chosen for such a desperate step.
