At the beginning of the 17th century, Europe was an explosive cauldron in which the passions of mutual hatred of Protestants and Catholics seethed. Almost all countries of the mainland made territorial claims against each other, and numerous ruling houses waged endless political and diplomatic intrigues. The explosion was only a matter of time and occasion - the reason was the bloody massacre in Prague of three representatives of the Holy Roman Empire. Thus began the large-scale Thirty Years' War. From 1618 to 1648, more and more new states were drawn into it, and, as a result, it covered the whole of Europe - from Spain to Sweden.
