The novel by G. Khrushchov-Sokolnikov was first published in 1889 and republished only once, in 1910. The story centers on the main event of the Great War of 1409–1411. - a battle in East Prussia, on the field between the villages of Grunwald and Tannenberg, which took place on July 15, 1410. In that grandiose battle, the ancestors of today’s Belarusians, Poles and Lithuanians defeated the troops of the Teutonic Order and its allies, stopping the further expansion of the German aggressors in Eastern Europe. The author gave a colorful panorama of authentic events of that time. Four love lines add piquancy to the plot: Rosalia Baranovskaya - Tugan Mirza; Skirmunda - David Glebovich; Sofia Belskaya - Joseph Sedletsky; Vendana - Arthur de Valois.
