Christopher Seeler as a child moved with his father and sister from Berlin to the English island of Jersey, where he became friends with Rebecca, who lived next door. When World War II begins, Jersey is occupied by fascist troops. As an adult, Christopher fearlessly remains on the island because of his German citizenship. Rebecca also decides to stay, but soon this choice turns against her - she has to register because of her Jewish origin, and one day she is arrested... Christopher joins the SS and goes to work in Auschwitz, hoping to find Rebecca among the prisoners.
