The MySQL relational database management system was developed and is still supported by the Swedish company MySQL AB. Today, MySQL is one of the most widespread open source DBMSs. This means that, with a number of minor exceptions, you can use it for free, and in addition, you can modify the source code, which is available on the Internet. This book discusses installing MySQL on Windows, Linux, Mac OS operating systems; launching and working with the DBMS is described in detail, with the main focus on database access and administration from the command line. A number of chapters are devoted to programming in PHP, Perl and Java. The text provides exercises that make it easier for novice users to learn MySQL. The appendices discuss issues of diagnosing and troubleshooting errors, provide background information and links to other sources.
