Jerzy Pilch (b. 1952) is one of the most popular contemporary Polish writers, the author of the books “List of Harlots” (Spis cudzołoznic, 1993), “Monologue from the Hole” (Monolog z lisiej jamy, 1996), “A Thousand Quiet Cities” (Tysiąc spokojnych miast, 1997), “Irretrievably lost left-handedness” (Bezpowrotnie utracona leworęczność, 1998), as well as several collections of feuilletons and essays. For his novel “Songs of the Drinkers” (Pod mocnym aniołem, 2000), Jerzy Pilch was awarded the most prestigious Polish literary prize “Nika”. “Songs of the Drinkers” is a sad and funny, authentically realistic and at the same time grotesquely absurd confession of the bitter drunkard writer Jerzy P. Life the hero-author and his companions, overcome by the green serpent, is divided into unequal segments: staying at home, where they, mostly unsuccessfully, try to lead a normal, “sober” existence, and in the clinic, where they are being treated for alcoholism.
