Two events in European history coincided in an amazing way: the discovery of America and the expulsion of Jews from Spain. On August 2, 1492, a squadron of three ships, commanded by Christopher Columbus, set sail. On the same day, Spanish Jews were forced to leave their homeland forever. The book by American historian Edward Krizler tells how exiles and their descendants sought a new homeland in the lands discovered by Columbus, how they fought with those who doomed them to exist in foreign lands. In 1992, Pope John Paul II received descendants of Spanish Jews in the Vatican. On behalf of the Catholic Church, he apologized to them for the persecution of their ancestors. Among those who listened to the Roman high priest were the descendants of the heroes of this book - Jewish pirates of the Caribbean.
