We present to the attention of readers a book by the famous Russian historian G.F. Karpov, first published in 1890, dedicated to the analysis of the historical image of the famous commander and statesman Bogdan Khmelnitsky, who led the uprising against Polish rule in the territory of modern Ukraine in 1648-1654. The author critically examines the work of P.A. Kulish “The Fall of Little Russia from Poland,” as well as the works of other historians about Bogdan Khmelnitsky, questioning the latter’s accusations of treason against the great sovereign, unbelief and immorality. If Khmelnitsky was a robber and a traitor, then why did the Moscow government accept him as its citizen? What could Bogdan Khmelnitsky count on for himself when seeking Moscow citizenship? The author of this study is trying to find answers to these and other questions.
The book will be useful to historians of various specialties, students and graduate students of history departments of universities, as well as a wide range of interested readers.
