Francis Spafford, not without irony, calls his book “The Land of Plenty” a fairy tale. A fairy tale about something that was about to become reality. This is a story about the Soviet Union as it was in the late fifties and early sixties, under Khrushchev. At that time, the Soviet people, having adopted a planned economy, were moving towards abundance and prosperity and in a couple of decades, as the state leaders promised, they were supposed to come to communism. The American exhibition in Sokolniki, the creation of an academic campus in Novosibirsk, Khrushchev’s trip to the USA, the shooting of a demonstration in Novocherkassk - all these events are described with amazing accuracy, but this is not a dry description, but a living story in which both real and fictional characters - party leaders - act and enthusiastic Komsomol members, leading scientists and ordinary workers.
