Jerzy Andrzejewski (1909-1983) is one of the most significant prose writers in modern Poland. The main theme of his works is the search for true spiritual values in human life. His prose causes controversy, encourages discussion, but it is always marked by the depth and ambiguity of philosophical premises, the novelty of artistic solutions.
The book tells about the Nazi massacre of the inhabitants of the Warsaw ghetto who tried to raise an uprising in the spring of 1943, just in Holy Week. No other Polish novel writes about the treatment of Jews with such honesty.
