As a child, Halima Bashir, the first female doctor of the African Zaghawa people, dreamed of treating her fellow villagers, but life turned out differently. Her confessional novel, written by the famous British journalist Damien Louis, is dedicated to the difficult fate of a fearless and uncompromising woman. Colorful sketches of village life, dramatic episodes of difficult school times, fascinating scenes from university times are replaced by chilling pictures of interethnic conflict: murder, torture, rape, robbery and sorrow the fate of refugees in the West. This happened not only with Halima, but only she decided to break the silence. In October 2010, Halima Bashir was awarded the Anna Politkovskaya Prize for her human rights work, but the writer could not come to the presentation due to a death threat.
