The Second World War is getting closer and closer to Guernsey. Vivienne de la Mare understands that something will have to be sacrificed. Not for her own sake, but for the sake of her two daughters and mother-in-law, whom she takes care of while her husband is fighting at the front. The only thing she does not expect is that she will fall in love with the mysterious German soldier who has settled in the house next door. Their feeling grows, and so does the pressure on Vivien. Every week there are more and more restrictions on food and resources. Despite the fact that Vivienne understands the danger of her relationship with Gunther, she believes that she can save both their love and her family. But when she realizes that the occupation is becoming increasingly harsh, she will have to decide whether she is ready to risk her own happiness for the life of a stranger.
