“France is me!” - only one person after Napoleon had the right to repeat these words of the “Sun King”, only one Frenchman in the twentieth century earned the title of GENIUS OF POWER - General de Gaulle. Hero of the Resistance, living symbol of unbroken France, founder of the Fifth Republic, he returned his homeland to its former glory and turned it into a great nuclear power, took it out of NATO and forever changed the world map. True, it has now somehow been forgotten that de Gaulle’s reign was not at all cloudless - historians count up to 20 attempts on his life, the most dangerous of which took place half a century ago, on August 22, 1962, when militants of the Secret Army Organization (SOA), who declared he had a real terrorist war in retaliation for granting independence to Algeria and the “betrayal” of a million French people forced to flee North Africa, riddled the president’s limousine in the Parisian suburb of Petit-Clamard, so that he only miraculously survived. However, General de Gaulle, who once declared: “Only the best are killed!”, was not afraid of death and was not shy in either expressions or actions, suppressing rebellions with an iron fist. “I respect only those who fight with me, but I do not intend to tolerate them,” the president said. “Choose - me or chaos!” Well, history has proven him right - de Gaulle is undoubtedly considered the greatest Frenchman of the twentieth century, worthy to rank with such titans as Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin, and politicians still repeat his words: “All the French were, are or will be Gaullists!”
