The regional center of Bratkovo is divided in half between Russia and Ukraine. It so happened that many village residents, Russian by origin, ended up in Ukraine, and Ukrainians ended up in Russia. In the middle of the village there is a customs tower, and along the border there is a concrete wall. The villagers speak a bizarre mixture of languages, and are mainly engaged in smuggling. An official from NATO, American John Strang, comes to visit Mr. Kushner, a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, who has a residence on the edge of the village.
